I am currently, and for the foreseeable future, creating a comic series for The Sun newspaper here in the UK. As you might have guessed by the heading of this post, ‘Shadows: The Awakening’ is the title of the comic, and it concerns vampires. The comic has run for a few weeks now and is at around thirty or so pages in to the story. If you would like to read the comic, and can’t get The Sun newspaper, you can view it online at www.thesun.co.uk, just look for the link on the right hand side of the main page and you will be able to read from the beginning.

The comic appears daily, Monday to Friday. I write the story and storyboard the pages, as well as create all of the artwork. Chris Nelson and I develop ideas together, and Chris writes final dialogue.

A couple of weeks back I was invited, via Twitter, to an evening at Escape Studios, the awesome CG training centre in London. A beer and CG evening! Sounds good doesn’t it? And it was. So last Friday evening I headed up to London and met some of the people who work there, as well as two other CG artists who were also invited via Twitter.

We were given a presentation about Escape Studios, and the courses they offer, and were then shown around the training rooms. Excellent facilities, and an awesome place to learn. After that the three of us invitees had the chance to sit and have a chat with three of Escapes tutors, namely Nick Savy, the creatures/characters tutor (has Batman Begins on his CV), Lee Danskin, the VFX tutor (and Maya Master), and Jeff Pratt, animation tutor (and formerly of Pixar and NASA – WOW! I know, right!). All of these guys were really great to talk to, although it was a little intimidating showing them my work given the amount of experience and knowledge between them. Once all of this formal stuff was out of the way it was down to the bar for some snacks and beers and good conversation.

All-in-all it was a great evening, I met some fantastic people, and I got to visit the awesome Escape Studios. I would certainly recommend the school to anyone wanting to get in to CG or even brush up on their skills or even learn new skills. I would love to take one of their courses myself, so I’ll have that in the plans for the future.
