On hiatus until January!

Hello everyone,

I’m sure you’ve all noticed the lack of updates, sorry for that. I’m currently working on some stuff for jobs, which is quite important of course, and haven’t had any extra time for Max And The Gorilla Goon Squad. I have quite a bit to do, as well as getting myself re-acquainted with a piece of software, so I can’t give an exact date of when in January the regular updating will begin again. I will of course let you all know when things get back on track.

Good movies and good comics!

Hey folks,

Page 95 is finally up. It was all nice and ready this morning but I had a little server upload problem, which was sorted out quite nicely by my service provider. It just delayed the upload for a little while, a bit annoying, but at least the new page is up now.

I thought I would mention a few things that I have seen or read lately that have been quite good. It’s always nice to come across inspiring, or just plain entertaining, works. I am always on the look out for really good comics and graphic novels, and I actually make a list of all of these and eventually get around to purchasing them as time goes on. I need to make lists as it’s easy to forget things, especially when the next ‘cool’ things comes out. And there are always good comics out there. There seems to be a big surge in good comics and graphic novels out there, probably due to the rise of the graphic novel, which pretty much all book shops are stocking now. I’m also quite far behind on a lot of good movies, but you know what, there’s no rush to see these things, it’s all in good time of course.

Last night we watched 300. A very good movie, I liked the fact that it was visually entertaining, like Sin City was, which goes without saying of course because they are both from Frank Miller. It was really nice to see them capture a lot of the same essence as the comics, and I could even recognize a lot of the panels from the comics. It wasn’t by any means a fantastically brilliant movie, but like I said, it was visually entertaining, real movie stuff where the sound and visuals worked nicely together.

I watched Transformers on the plane back to the UK. The movie seemed quite good, even on the tiny screen, and I quite enjoyed the characters and the story. A lot of typical movie stuff, same types of characters etc, but entertaining nevertheless. I will have to see it on a bigger screen though, you don’t quite get a good sense or feel for the awesome special effects on the tiny aircraft screens.

We’ve been watching the ‘Heroes‘ tv series, and are absolutely LOVING it. I wish I owned the dvd so we wouldn’t have to wait for the next rental disc to arrive. I couldn’t imagine watching a series like this on regular tv as the waiting for each weeks new episode would be too much. We’ve really been enjoying watching a whole tv series on dvd, as we can sit and watch as many episodes as we like in one sitting, no waiting for next weeks episode. Anyways, Heroes has been SO GOOD, there aren’t any characters that I don’t like and the story is unfolding nicely. The effects are awesome as well, no cheesy stuff there at all. I highly recommend this series if you haven’t watched it yet.

And now on to the four books I’ve received in the past couple of months. The first is Super Spy, by Matt Kindt. This first appeared as a webcomic on the website of awesome graphic novel publisher Top Shelf, but is now collected in one very nice looking book. Matt Kindt is well known for the cool design work he does on all of his graphic novels, and this is no exception. Super Spy is made up of various stories of spies during World War 2, each story a bit different, and some of them linking together as well. Matt Kindt’s artwork fits the stories perfectly and really adds to the tone of the stories and the whole ’spy’ world. I’ve loved all of it so far and highly recommend this book.

I’ve started reading the second collection of Rocketo, by Frank Espinosa. I was blown away by the first book and couldn’t wait to get into second book, which follows directly on from book1. Espinosa’s artwork is amazing, it is so simple with minimal use of line, and color, but conveys everything it needs to in a way only good comic art can. The story is BIG, the world Espinosa has created is big as well, and you feel you’re reading a story with a lot of history, you know there’s so much more to what you are reading. Awesome stuff!

The last two books I’m only just getting in to. Pulphope, by Paul Pope, who is one of my all time favorite comic creators. Pulphope is more than an art book, it contains many essays by Pope on his art, his theories on art etc etc, and is a valuable book about this awesome comic creator. I love Pope art style and the subject matter of his stories are very different and unique, especially in the American comics market. He’s got a book coming out next year from First Second Books, called Battling Boy, which I’m eagerly awaiting. LOVE this guys work, so go check him out, everything he’s done is awesome.

The last book is Mouse Guard, which was pretty much the big book of 2006. The hardcover collection came out this year and I’ve finally got my hands on a copy and am eagerly waiting to read it. The artwork is beautiful and the world, story and characters all look amazing. Everyone has been giving this series very good reviews. The second series has just started. David Petersen now works on this full time, after initially producing this only in his spare time. He’s also signed deals for the book to be distributed by a major book publisher worldwide. Very cool indeed!

Anyways, thats my little list of cool things from the recent couple of weeks. I hope you check some, or all, of these out if you haven’t already.
